Under 16’s Report V Northern Pride

The CQ Comets under 16’s added another win to their 2009 account with a 20 -18 victory against Northern Pride side on Saturday afternoon in Mackay.

The Comets got the first try of the match after a determined effort by Prop Steven Coombes but failed to capitalise dropping the ball twice with the line wide open. Poor reaction to these mistakes seen them trail 8 – 4 at the break even though the Comets looked the better side for most of the first half.

Things didn’t improve in the start of the second half with Northern Pride scoring two quick converted tries to take the lead 20 – 4 with about 20 minutes remaining.

It was then the pride of the boys kicked in and they started their come back. Led by a brilliant kicking game from Five Eight Kurt Mann the boys where able to dominate field position and continually turn their much bigger forward pack around.

They converted the field position into four second half tries and after a few anxious moments hung on for a 20 – 18 win. The coaching staff where very happy with the comeback, but the most pleasing aspect was the way they stuck to their structures and believed they could get the job done.

The side is now sitting in second position on the ladder 10 points and have two games to play one against Wide Bay and the other against Northern Territory. Both of these sides are yet to win a game in the competition but are not to be taken lightly.

COMETS U18 – ROUND 3 WRAP-UP

Comets 22 – Northern Pride 26

For the second week in a row, the squad can lament what could have been.  Trailing 20 points to NIL at half time, the team played a great second half to get back to 24 points to 22 with 3 minutes left on the clock.  However, playing 30 minutes of football will not allow the side to win games at this level.  What the second half showed is that the side has the ability to score sensational tries however the defensive effort must improve.

This weeks game against Wide Bay takes on special significance with a maximum 5 points on offer.
