Comets Continue their Winning ways 16/04/2009
The Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets continued their impressive start to the 2009 Qld Cup season with a hard fought 23 – 18 victory over the Ipswich Jets on Saturday night at Briggs Road. Facing a Jets team that was desperate to register a maiden win in 09, the Comets had to dig deep in the closing stages to snatch victory and further blur the jets finals dreams. The home team led by former Broncos and Rockhampton product Ian Lacey were first to register points in the first half after the Comets defence was a little hesitant near their line. They were again next to score setting up a healthy 12 – 0 lead and sending a message to the visitors that they were ready to play. From there the Comets rallied through some tireless work up front and some clever dummy half running from Club stalwart Dallas Williams. Both sides went into the halftime break ruing some missed chances as the deficit would read 12 – 6 to the Jets. The second half saw the Comets as they have continued to do in 2009 answer the challenge, with a second half comeback to register their 4th win from 5 starts. The win was marred by the sin binning of second rower Alan Rothery and the departure of Aaron Summers from the field after a nasty collision. The Comets best were lead by Dallas Williams from the back and Tyron Haynes who rarely turns in a bad report. This weekend’s clash promises plenty with frontrunners North’s Devils heading North to Browne Park to tackle a confident CQ outfit and a hostile local crowd. Special mention should go to our Major sponsors for 2009 – Rockhampton Leagues Club (Platinum), PCD Steel Processing (Gold) and Mitsubishi Motors (Silver).
