Comets Historic Win 06/04/2009
The Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets completed an historic victory on Sunday disposing of multiple Qld Cup premiers Redcliffe at Dolphin oval. In front of a faithful Dolphins following the Comets put past performances on the scrap heap to over power the once league power houses in a display that made Coach Barnett stand up and notice.
The first half was riddled with missed opportunities for the Comets with several players held up over the line. Defence would be the catalyst for the travelling team as they continued on a relentless display of enthusiasm and aggression leaving the dolphins scratching their heads. The half time score would read 10 all but most would have pitted the Comets at least two tries the better in the opening stanza.
The second half was one that the Comets can draw future confidence out of keeping the Dolphins scoreless while posting 24 points to run out winners 34 – 10. Try scorers for the Comets were led by Tom Hewitt bagging a double and in the process showing Ivan Henjak he’s ready to make the jump back to the top grade. Andrew (Heavy) Dale was dominant bagging a try along with Gerard Parle, Nat Bowman and the ever improving Marc Fickling. Special mention has to go to PJ Marsh who played as good as his reputation precedes him with a game that is sure to see him back in Broncos colours. Others to make their mark were Aaron Summers in the front row who is bound to be receiving some attention from Country selectors as well as Gerard Parle who played his old team with the passion that was needed. The Comets travel to take on a winless Ipswich side keen to post a first win in 2009. Glen Lazarus will surely have his side primed for the match which could have a significant effect on their final aspirations. The Comets would like to thank their Major Sponsors for 2009, PCD Steel (Queensland’s leading Steel processing company) and Mitsubishi Motors ‘Love That Car’.
