Comets Set the Pace 20/04/2009
Wind the clock back a year and you ask the average punter if the Comets will be setting the pace after round 6 and you would probably get a rife response.
That is exactly the case in 2009 as the Comets continue to defy the last decade of adversity to sit atop the second best Rugby League competition in the country. This is due largely to a crux of local players who make up the nuts and bolts of the club who have gained the experience required to compete at this level. Throw a few key players in important positions into the mix and you start to see why things are changing in the centre of the state. The weekend was no different with the Comets overcoming a North’s outfit making itself known with some eye catching football to start the year.
The first half was tit for tat as both sides were locked at 12 all right up until a few minutes from the break. The visitors would score late in the half to take a 6 point buffer into the sheds and give a side full of youth all the confidence in the remaining stanza. But as they have continued to do all season the Comets found that extra gear with a commanding second half led by Karl Johnson and Ian Webster. The second half also saw the Browne Park faithful catch a first glimpse of excitement machine Jade Williams playing for the first time in the blue, orange and white. The ex Storm and Penrith player was scintillating with two tries complimenting an all round solid defensive effort first up. Although the Devils dug deep in the second half it wasn’t enough to counter a 24 point onslaught from the home side and the final score would end up 38 – 30.
The Comets now travel to East’s to play their first TV game of 2009 with what shapes to be a cracker. The Comets would like to thank their Gold sponsors of 2009 PCD STEEL PROCESSING, a leader in the Steel processing industry the Brisbane based company is starting to show mining companies and alike it’s capabilities in CQ with contracts for draglines just a part of their run sheet!
