Comets Great Escape 13/05/2009
The Rockhampton Leagues Club Central Queensland Comets continued their winning ways on the weekend when they came from behind to overcome a determined Sunshine Coast in Bundaberg.
With the services of Dave Taylor available you would have thought the Comets were going to give the Sea Eagles a tough encounter but it would be just the opposite with the first half dominated by the home side. The Sea Eagle ran in 4 first half tries to the Comets 1 to go into the break 20 – 6 up thanks to some clever work from Manly product Trent Hodkinson.
Half time saw the Comets do some sole searching to try and dig themselves out of the massive hole they were sitting in. But at the resumption the Sea Eagles picked up where they left off and score 2 more tries to go out to what most would say is an unassailable lead 32 – 6 with 17 minutes remaining on the clock. From there Dave Taylor took the bull by the horns and went on a rampage scoring a try and setting up 2 others in a class display to resurrect the Comets prospects of winning. Tyron Haynes move to second row from the centres also contributed to the comeback as he scored a brilliant try 10 minutesĀ from full time and secured man of the match honours at the same time. The miracle comeback was complete when Broncos bound Taylor threw a cut out pass to Junior Auru to score out wide and secure a 2 point victory at the death.
The win has placed the Comets outright at the top of the Qld Cup ladder and set up a blockbuster with third placed Northern Pride in Rockhampton this weekend.
