Comets ignore History 25/05/2009

The Central Queensland Comets continue to defy history with a record nine straight victories on Saturday night against the Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park.

In conditions that would only suit the brave, the boys from Central Queensland ignored the past between the sides to go on and record a hefty 42 – 8 victory and firmly establish their lead atop the Qld Cup at the midway point of the season.

With gale force winds and driving rain trying to dampen the event both teams would surprisingly rise to the occasion from the outset, with first points registered in the opening minutes. Adam Fielder was the recipient when he latched onto a clever kick from Brent McConnell to set up the ideal start for the home side. Parfit would miss the conversion and from there the Comets would be the only other scorers for the remainder of the first half. Current Country and Queensland Residents centre Karl Johnson produced the equaliser not long after followed by Broncos bound Tommy Hewitt who scored a try out of nothing late in the half.

The second stanza was all about the Comets and the conditions weren’t about  to slow the league leaders down. Doubles to Johnson, Hewitt and try scoring machine Jade Williams all but shut the gate for the bears the final score line reading 42 points to 8. Given the conditions and the obstacle of a fired up Burleigh side this would be the sweetest of victories for the Comets one that they will be able to savour. To give a stand out for the Comets would be unfair but special mention has to go to the boys in the engine room with Aaron Summers putting in a first class performance dominating and continuing his march toward Country selection. Tyron Haynes was also at his best as was Ian Webster and Mick Esdale who surely have tongues wagging.

Next week sees the battle at Blackwater with the top of the table clash between the Comets and Souths Logan. A bumper crowd is tipped and if Dave Taylor gets the ok to play as the Broncos have a bye this is almost certain with the star playing in his home town. We would like to thank PCD Steel and Yarrabee Coal for getting the game to Blackwater and all of the support sponsors for the event.
