Comets win a nail biter 18/05/2009
Browne Park was alive and kicking on Saturday night as fans witnessed rugby league of the highest quality.
The Pride travelled to Browne Park with a massive task of upsetting competition frontrunners the Central Comets and end a seven game winning streak to go with it. They were to get off to the perfect start with two quick tries in the opening minutes through halves Chris Sheppard and Tom Humble, though both tries were unconverted to leave the visitors on 8 points. The Comets were next to score bridging the gap with two quick tries and reply to the early pressure from the Pride. The remaining minutes of the half were a real arm wrestle with both teams trading blows and eventually another try each to take the half time score to 14 all.
The half time break couldn’t have come sooner as the pace of the first half left both teams reeling. The Prides enthusiastic defence was troubling the home side forcing unwanted errors in crucial positions. The Pride were first to score with Qld residents back rower Cantoni scoring out wide after a well run line to catch the defence off guard. Then the Comets hit back in similar fashion through some clever lead up work from Nat Bowman. But it would be the last 5 minutes of the game that those on hand would take away with them when first Tom Humble intercepted a pass that would surely have resulted in a Comets try, to run 90 metres and score under the posts and put them in front by 2. But as they did the week before the Comets would have the last laugh and through another Dave Taylor bust they were able to shift it wide and Tyron Haynes went in to finish what most would say was the match of the season. The Comets running out winners by 2 points.
Alan Rothery grabbed the man of the match while Aaron Summers stood tall with Marc Fickling. The Comets now travel to Pizzey Park to tackle Burleigh in the last clash of the first half of the season.
