Comets back on track 29/06/2009

The Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets got the premiership train back on track with a hard fought win on Sunday to share equal top spot with the in form Souths Logan Magpies.

In front of a bumper crowd around the 3000 mark, the Comets took up the challenge early to Redcliffe with any doubts about a form slump quickly dismissed. Within ten minutes the Comets were on the board through five eighth Jade Williams who crossed out wide after some clever play by Bowman. The second try went the Comets way after Ian Webster continually peppered the Redcliffe forwards and the score extended to 12 nil. From there the Comets would further stretch there lead going out to 18 points to nil and a massive psychological advantage. Just before the half time break the Dolphins were rewarded for their persistence and they would scores and convert to bridge the gap.

The half time break would have been to the delight of the visitors as they came out punching in the second stanza. With Mick Esdale sent from the field the Dolphins capitalized shifting the ball wide to take advantage of the extra man and shorten the margin to just 6. But as they have done most of the year the home side rallied to score back to back try’s and put the game beyond doubt. Only 2 late tries allowed Redcliffe to add respectability to a scoreline that gave the local fans much to cheer about.

Standout performers for the Comets were Ian Webster who filled in at five eighth admirably along with co half Nat Bowman. Another to impress was Origin and International star Matt Sing who filled in at fullback on his return from retirement with distinction. The Comets will now rest for the coming bye with 4 of our boys on Country duty. Good luck boys!
