Comets bow to bogey team 09/06/2009

The Rockhampton Leagues Club Central Comets fell to their 2009 bogey team the Wynnum Seagulls at Browne Park on Saturday 12 points to 10, threatening the Comets 2 point lead atop the Qld Cup ladder.

With the support of 2,500 local fans screaming their support the Comets had many chances to end the drought against the baysiders. The game started in familiar fashion for the Comets with the opposition registering first points through Chris Birch. From there the conversion was slotted and the Seagulls raced to a 6 nil lead. The Comets rallied and 10 minutes out from half time hit back through captain Nat Bowman with a set move on the left side. The conversion was unsuccessful and the halftime score read 6 – 4 to the Seagulls.

The second stanza was dominated by the Comets attack with several line breaks made, but the scrambling Wynnum defence was equally potent shutting down numerous scoring opportunities. 10 minutes out from the final bell and Wynnum exposed the Comets outside men and went through the hands to score in the corner and extend the advantage to 10 – 4. In what would prove the match clincher Matt Seamark converted from the sideline to give the visitors an 8 point buffer with less than 10 on the clock. The Comets finally got some possession in Wynnums danger zone and Ian Webster barged his way over the line to set up a big finish. But the great escape would elude the high flying Comets and the final siren sent the Comets back to the drawing board ahead of their next clash with Tweed Heads on ABC on June 20.

The Comets would like to thank all who attended the Corporate Curtain Raiser pre game as all who attended welcomed the opportunity to mingle with other sponsors.

We’ll see you on Sunday June 28 when we take on heavyweights the Redcliffe Dolphins at 3pm for a Super Sunday of Qld Cup action at Browne Park
