Comets down but not out! 02/06/2009
The nine game record winning streak held by the Comets was put to a grinding holt on Saturday night with the Souths Logan Magpies cutting lose in a second half scoring frenzy.
Led by regular Raiders front men Joe Picker and Glen Turner the Magpies were clinical in exposing the tired Comets defence after back to back sets of six tackling. The game started well for the Comets with five eighth Jade Williams cutting the line open at will eventually leading to the opening points of the match through Guy Williams. From there Souths hit back after some clever work from five eighth Phil Dennis and the scores were locked up at six all. The game momentum swayed back and forth for the rest of the half and the half time score would read 10 – 6 in the Magpies favour.
The second half started much the same as the first with back rower Tyron Haynes picking up a lose pass from Nat Bowman to hit the front 12 – 10. Up until the 60th minute the Comets held the lead but that’s when the shape of the game turned decisively. The Magpies score three tries within 5 minutes then followed this up in the last 15 minutes with 4 more to all but smash the Comets record winning streak and go home with a smile on their face. For the Comets only a few turned up to play and among those were Guy Williams and Jade Williams who tried all day.
The Comets now play Wynnum in Rockhampton to get back on the road to the finals. The Comets would like to thank this years Silver Sponsor Mitsubishi Motors who are have their massive end of year car sale this month ‘Love That Car’
