Comets Lose Third On The Trot 22/06/2009
The Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets suffered a third straight defeat on Saturday at the hands of a red hot Tweed Heads outfit hell bent on making their third straight finals series.
The ABC game of the week promised plenty with both sides hosting a number of NRL players headed by Centrals Dave Taylor. The Comets started the better of the two sides with a mountain of possession early resulting in debutant Joe Collins-Soo touching down in the corner to open the visitors account. From there the Comets would pepper the Tweed line on several occasions only to come up short with a number of missed opportunities coming back to bite later in the match. The Seagulls hung in their and hit back soon after through a well weighted bomb from Brad Davis giving Ben Jeffrey an easy try. Then just before half time Tweed crossed again to go to the break leading 12 – 4.
The second half almost mirrored the first with the Comets breaking the line at will through Souths Sydney bound Taylor. The Comets were first to score after Jade Williams showed a tonne of pace to skirt the sideline and link up with other first gamer Anthony Raymond. But as has happened in the last two games the Comets wasted valuable chances and eventually fell short of the fast finishing Seagulls.
This week sees the Comets up against another side searching for some form in Redcliffe after they were well beaten by Wynnum Manly on Sunday. Comets fans can expect a welcome surprise with the backline bolstered by one of the games more prolific outside backs of the last decade.
