Comets Finals Bound 20/07/2009

The Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets staged a second half onslaught to put one foot inside the 2009 finals door on Saturday against Norths at Biloela. Featuring NRL star Ashton Sims and former Origin reps Matt Sing and Matt Geyer a big crowd was on hand to witness rugby league at it’s elite level in the bush.

The first half was dominated by the Devils who ran in two quick tries to race to a ten nil lead in the early running. The Comets battled to retain possession and for a majority of the half did just enough to stay in touch. In the closing stages of the half the Comets were able to post first points and cut the deficit to just four points. But just before the break Norths gained possession in the Comets twenty zone and crossed out wide only to miss the conversion and go into the sheds with an eight point buffer.

The water must have been spiked as the Comets entered the final forty minutes a different side and the points began to flow. The type of play that registered the Comets a record nine straight wins began to reappear much to the delight of coach Barnett as he watched his side dismantle the Devils defensive line with a renewed enthusiasm and will. Led by Welsh international Ian Webster and Storm recruit Jade Williams the Comets hit top gear posting some of the tries of the season, one almost 100 meters to secure the win and almost assure the CQ boys a maiden finals berth.

Special mention has to go to Tyron Haynes who displayed the ability to go to the next level with ease, along with Aaron Summers who was strong backing up from residents a few days earlier. The Comets now go home to familiar territory and face a rejuvenated Easts Tigers.
