Comets hold second spot 13/07/2009

The CQ Comets have suffered yet another home game loss on the back of a stirring win against Redcliffe in previous weeks. Undermanned for the clash it was always going to be an uphill battle given Ipswich’s strongest line up for 2010 made the trek north to face the league leaders.

The game started all in the favour of the Jets running in two quick tries with the weight of possession early taking it’s toll. From there the Comets hit back after some pressure leading to an even ledger five minutes from the break. Then the Browne Park crowd came to life when the home side shifted the ball wide to score and convert on the half time siren.

The second half was a real arm wrestle with both sides remaining scoreless in the opening exchanges. At the 60 minute mark the turning point of the game unfolded when Alan Rothery was sent off followed by a mountain of penalties against the Comets through ill discipline led to the Jets getting the upper hand. They would run in three quick tries to put the game beyond doubt and send the Comets back to the drawing board ahead of their clash with Norths in Biloela. The clash marks the appearance of a couple of former origin stars in Matt Sing and Matt Geyer turning out for both sides.
