Comets back on the saddle 04/08/2009

The Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets have answered the call from coach Barnett by disposing of the Mackay Cutters in Mackay on Sunday. The Comets travelled north chasing two points after some below par performances in recent times. The game was also the third and final leg of the Meng Shield with the Comets holding an unassailable lead going into the match.

The game kicked off in fine fashion for the Comets with two quick tries to race ahead 10 nil in the early running. From there with a strong breeze behind them the Comets went into over drive carving the middle of the Cutters defensive line up at will only to fall short at the last hurdle on more than a number of occasions. Just before the break the Cutters on the back of some clever lead up work from captain Jardine Bobongi scored to edge closer 12 points to 6. The second stanza was up and down for both sides with mistakes plaguing their attack. With the finals lost and gone the Cutters threw plenty at the Comets to try and overcome the competition front runners, but in the end it would not be enough to derail the CQ boys maiden finals campaign. Special mention should go out to hooker Ian Webster who although being concussed early played on with a five star performance in the middle. He was well supported by former international and origin regular Matt Sing out wide.

The Comets now return home to Browne Park to tackle a rampant Sunshine Coast side with a firm grip on fourth place with three rounds to go.
