COACH’S REPORT: COMETS VS EASTS RD 3 29/03/2010
Under the watchful eye of coach, Jason Gainey, the Easts Tigers came out and gave our boys an old fashion lesson on how to play footy.
The Tigers had obviously done their homework.
They played an up-tempo style of footy and defended as if they were playing in a Grand Final.
Leading into the game I thought the Comets boys’ attitudes were good.
During the first 10 minutes of the match, we were applying pressure to Easts’ goal line and we had the better of the field position.
However, when we didn’t convert this pressure into points we started to panic.
Instead of getting into the arm wrestle with the Tigers and continually pressuring the Tigers’ defense we decided to play touch footy and go from sideline to sideline.
Speaking at half-time I eluded to the boys that in the first half they played into the hands of Easts’ non-confrontational style defense.
By moving the ball from side to side rather than working their middle over we let their bigger players rest in the middle of the field.
There was still plenty to take out of the match and I believe that our squad can learn something from it.
I hope they realise now that in the 2010 Intrust Super Queensland Cup, anyone can beat anyone on their day, it all comes back to who wants it the most.
This week, the Tool of the Week was a hard one to pick.
I decided on giving it to Ben Hunt, purely because it was his birthday on Saturday, and we lost the game.
Happy 20th Birthday Ben.
