COACH’S REPORT: COMETS VS MACKAY RD 1 17/03/2010

With round one successfully completed, I’d like to welcome you all to the 2010 season.

2010 sees the Comets sporting a new logo, new major sponsors and a new ‘100 Club’ winner as well as numerous local sponsors joining our long serving and greatly appreciated corporate partners.

To top off all the exciting achievements the club has recently made, the year couldn’t have started better with the Comets beating local rivals the Mackay Cutters, on Saturday night.

Mackay brought a team with six NRL contracted players and a new coach, former Souths Logan premiership-winning coach, Paul Bramley.

All were out to impress on night one of the Intrust Super Queensland Cup and, as expected Mackay were a completely different outfit from what they were last year.

With the talent they had on display and given time to gel together, the Cutters are going to be a handful for any team in the Intrust Super Cup.

I thought our boys played well with each player contributing to the winning result.

We were under pressure throughout the entire game with Mackay pushing our line and really working our defense around the park.

With regular players Jade Williams, George Tuakura and Alan Rothery all sitting on the side line, our new-look Comets side went out and played a brand of footy that was pleasing for all to watch. Now that a little pressure has been relieved after getting our first win under the belt, the boys can really focus on all the one percent plays that will hopefully make this year one to remember.

This week, the inaugural Webbers’ Retravision Man of the Match award was won by Chris Beasley with an outstanding start to 2010.

Mick Esdale was a very close second with his best defensive effort to date.

On a lighter note, this year I am adding a ‘Tool of the Week’ Award purely voted on by me. With all players and staff in the running, this week’s award has to go to Ian Webster.

Webster kicked an international record of 15 from 16 goals in a single match, but failed to kick a goal for the Comets on Saturday night!
