Comets thrashed by Tweed Heads 25/05/2010
CQ COMETS chief executive Scott Minto was not offering any excuses after Saturday’s 36-0 thrashing at the hands of Tweed Heads.
The win over Wynnum Manly and a solid display when losing to Souths Logan had given the Comets the confidence to think they could collect two competition points on their travels.
Eleven minutes into the game came the reality it was not going to happen as the home team raced away to a 20-0 lead.
“After that we were playing catch-up,” Minto added.
Coach Wayne Barnett had looked at what the Seagulls had done in previous matches and identified, logically, that they were not defensively sound with opposition having put points on them even in matches the Tweed had won.
That was never going to happen this time around as the home team was impressive while the Comets put together one of their worst displays in the past two years.
“They had a good side on the park as the Titans (the Seagulls are a feeder) had the bye,” Minto explained.
“But our boys … I think they left their minds in Rocky.”
A hat-trick of tries from impressive Tweed Heads youngster Kayne Lawton helped the Seagulls to the big victory, their fourth-successive win in the Intrust Super Cup.
Even though the Comets were behind on the scoreboard and nowhere at their best they were still able to prevent the Seagulls adding to their 20-point lead for almost 45 minutes.
Minto said the pick of the Comets was, once again, Alan Rothery.
“He never stopped trying,” he said.
Minto refuses to admit the Comets are now playing for pride and not a place in the top six.
“We have the players. This is still the best team we have had at the Comets,” he insisted.
Minto said there was determination in the camp to get things back on course.
“There was plenty of healthy discussion after the game,” he said.
“I remember when I was at the Broncos and we fell in a hole, but we turned it all around in a week,” the coach recalled.
Tyron Haynes was solid on his return from injury, as was Guy Williams, who began in the centres and then replaced Marc Fickling at five-eighth after he received an injury.
Tweed’s other tries came from Shannon Walker, Cameron White, Dominique Peyroux and Cody Nelson while Nelson 2, Lawton and Brad Davis shared the goals.
Next week the Comets play against Ipswich Jets at Browne Park.
The Jets were beaten at home this weekend by the Mackay Cutters.
